We are recruiting to fill the position below:
Job Title: Health Nurse Midwife
Location: Nganzai, Borno
Scope of Work
- He / she will work closely with the other members of the health team, Peer Educators and community health workers in Maiduguri and Jere. The Health Nurse-Midwife is responsible for supportive Supervision and patient care at health facilities. The Nurse reports to the team leader or Health Manager.
Roles and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of Health Manager, the responsibilities of the Health Nurse/Midwife includes but are not limited to the following:
Community Activities:
- Participation in the design, plan and input to the work-plans, based on identified trends and needs with particular focus on the EU grant.
- Implementation of reproductive health services supervision for PHC staff working in government supported health centers in “hard to reach” and vulnerable beneficiaries.
- Organize culturally sensitive educational and promotional activities to raise awareness on RH topics/services, including:
- Family Planning
- Mother and Neonatal health, Antenatal Care and Postnatal Care , o Awareness of STIs and infection prevention o Referral and guidance for survivors of sexual assault.
- Develop and adapt a variety of health education material and tools to fit the context.
- Mobilize the community, women and girls, women’s groups, community groups etc. to increase RH awareness and service utilization, together with RH and GBV teams.
- Liaise with midwives and Community Health Workers/Peer Educators to track and monitor women/clients targeted by the program.
- Ensure the safe and confidential referral of identified survivors of sexual assault to GBV services.
- Organize meetings with community representatives, and target groups as needed.
- Engage community leaders and women’s groups in raising awareness on Reproductive Health
- Participate in the recruitment of Community Health Workers and/or Peer Educators
- Training of Community Health Workers (CHWs) and or Peer Educators on RH topics/service promotion, hygiene promotion, waste management, infection prevention etc.
- Supervise CHWs/ Peer Educators during planned community activities.
- Participate in community workshops, meetings or any discussions on reproductive health
- Assist in the collection of all data required from the community for reproductive health project
- Participate in the development and translation of all messages in the most appropriate language as it will be required.
- Active participation in the regular RH/GBV meetings.
- Conduct skills assessments of PHC staff in nursing care and Midwifery.
- Human Resource Management
- Supervise and monitor PHC midwifery staff.
- Build staff capacity through on Job coaching, skill training and supportive supervision.
- Jointly with the team, provide ongoing education for clinic staff and CVs. Operations:
- Maintain an updated record and compile and submit monthly reports of all services given.
- Monitor and ensure the proper usage of health and program supplies.
- Prepare weekly work plans and ensure timely implementation of the project activities.
- Support health clinical Officer in compiling statistical reports from the facilities for submission weekly, monthly and annually.
- Ensure adequate flow of information for all supervisees with constant feedback as may be required.
- Carry out other relevant or requested duties as may be required.
Key Result Areas:
- Improvement of key health indicators mainly maternal mortality ratio, neonatal mortality ratio, and community population coverage.
- Increased uptake of health services as a strategy of reducing mortality
- Increased uptake of positive practices related to health, nutrition and hygiene.
- Timely and quality health care services to displaced persons, refugees and other vulnerable groups. Community volunteers actively participate in health services within their community.
Qualifications for Health Supervisor
- Registered Nurse/midwife
- A mature person of high professional discipline and moral integrity, able to work under stress as the situation may dictate.
- Must possess the practicing license or qualifying certificate.
- Certificate in child health or nutrition is an added advantage.
Competencies:
- Two to three years’ experience in midwifery.
- Proven experience in community based programming with the ability to motivate and lead community volunteers.
- Flexible to travel and work in different locations.
- Ability to speak local languages will be added advantage.
- Proficiency in computer skills, especially in MS Word and Excel is an added advantage.
- Proven ability to coach and train health workers.
- Ability to work with displaced communities with diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
- Experience in working in a team.
Work Environment:
- The position will work in the Maiduguri Field Office as outlet to support Nganzai L.G.A. The program site in Northern Nigeria. This is security level 3 – orange
