Job Title: Communication Officer
Location: Kano
Program Background
- International Medical Corps has been operating in Nigeria since November 2013, and currently has projects in two States (Kano and Borno). In Borno, International Medical Corps has been actively implementing interventions to support vulnerable populations recently affected by conflict and displacement due to insurgency.
- In Kano and Borno, IMC is a consortium member of the Core Group Polio Project in Nigeria. This is a five-year Polio Eradication program in covering 6 LGAs in Kano and 10 in Borno. IMC is implementing this project in partnership with CSADI in Kano.
- IMC is utilizing a three-pronged strategy to implement the Project to increase rates of routine immunization and supplementary immunization activities for children under 5 years of age, focusing especially on polio vaccination. The project 1) re-enforces the Ministry of Health’s routine immunization program to improve its performance, 2) strengthen supplemental polio immunization efforts, and 3) improves community mobilization in support of child immunization and acute flaccid paralysis surveillance. This is to improve the Expanded Program on Immunization services contributing to CGPP’s goal of polio eradication in hard-to-reach communities.
Job Summary
- The Communication Officer will be responsible for designing, planning and providing technical guidance on social mobilization activities in the polio eradication project in Kano states. She will work closely with the local implementing partners, social mobilization working groups both at the states and also CGPP secretariat, to ensure efficient and effective social mobilization in the implementation of the PEI activities in the two states.
Main Responsibilities
- Support implementation of social and community mobilization activities in collaboration with the local implementing partners’ staff (LGACs, VWS, VCMs), state social mobilization working groups
- Support advocacy with religious and community leaders to create an enabling environment to improve awareness on the benefits of polio and routine immunization and promote uptake of these services during immunization plus days’ campaigns and at the health facilities.
- Organize meetings with religious, traditional and community leaders, village heads, community groups and other relevant community stakeholders to improve awareness on polio, routine immunization, AFP surveillance.
- Support training and supervision of Voluntary Community Mobilizers and other social and or community mobilization agents working under the polio project.
- Support the M&E Officers and Senior Program officer to effectively collect, collate and report social and community mobilization data as required.
- Collaborate with State Senior Program officer and State M&E Officers to ensure documentation of all community mobilization activities.
- Prepare and submit timely and quality activity reports, including field notes and success stories, to effectively capture lessons learnt on the ground from the projects.
- Provide administrative support as needed.
- Carry out other tasks to support the polio project activities as assigned.

Qualification and Experience
- First degree or its equivalent in Social/ Behavioral Sciences (Development Studies, Anthropology, Psychology, and Health Education) or any other relevant discipline of study
- Master’s degree will be an added advantage.
- Proven experience on strategic communication planning for behavior development, social mobilization, participatory communication, and research.
- Minimum of Three (3) years “Hands On” work experience in advocacy, social and or community mobilization in polio projects or any health programs.
- Excellent communication, and organizational skills; – and- ability to influence and facilitate advocacy agendas at LGA and State level.
- Understanding of local communities and cultures in the relevant states of operations and ability to communicate fluently in Hausa.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Ability to travel and work in difficult settings, including remote rural areas of Nigeria.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint, or similar software.
- Well-organized, with ability to track multiple activities and deadlines.
- Experience in providing administrative support to work teams.

Job Title: Community Outreach Worker
Location: Damboa, Borno
Job Summary
- As part of IMC’s gender-based violence (GBV) prevention and response program, the Community Outreach Worker will work to increase the community’s understanding of GBV (including its causes and consequences) and to engage men, women, boys and girls in developing their own strategies to prevent violence and create safer, healthier communities. The Community Outreach Worker will also contribute to the weekly and monthly reporting of the Prevention component implemented in Maiduguri or Damboa of Borno state.
- This position reports directly to the GBV Manager.
Specific Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the GBV Community Outreach Worker include, but are not limited to the following:
Program Development and Implementation:
- With support from the GBV Manager, and in collaboration with GBV community volunteers, conduct quarterly safety audits.
- Participate in community asset mapping, training of GBV volunteers, and the development of communication materials and advocacy strategies as part of the broader prevention program strategies.
- Support GBV Community Outreach Volunteers in developing and implementing weekly plans to prevent violence against women and girls in their communities.
- Work with the Community Outreach Volunteers to disseminate information about the available services for survivors of GBV (Case Management and Medical Services) as well as group activities at WGFS for women and girls.
- Identify and refer vulnerable women and girls to access services and material support at the WGFS in accordance with their level of vulnerability and needs.
- In collaboration with the GBV Women Center Facilitator, facilitate awareness raising in the community using the EMAP framework.
- Support other prevention and awareness activities as needed, including 16 Days of Activism and International Women’s Day Celebrations.
HR Management & Staff Support:
- Actively promote PSEA (Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) standards within International Medical Corps and amongst beneficiaries served by International Medical Corps.
- Adhere to IMC procedures in preparing the necessary documentation for procuring training approval, materials, and payments for vendors etc, in a timely and efficient manner.
- Contribute to the positive image and overall credibility of the organization, notably through the application of the organization’s Code of Conduct.
- Consider security implications of all program activities, reviewing all new initiatives with staff teams and community leaders.
Other:
- Refrain from making false and unrealistic promises and commitments to the beneficiaries and work in the best interest of the IMC GBV Program.

Qualification, Experience and Skills
- University degree in Civil Law, Human Rights, Gender, Development, Psychology, Social Work or a Gender related program;
- Willingness to work with the Community Outreach Volunteers at the community level.

- Experience in implementing and facilitating EMAP and other GBV prevention curriculums
- Strong background in human rights and familiarity with practical challenges faced by displaced and other vulnerable persons,

Job Title: GBV Women Center Facilitator
Location: Damboa, Borno
Job Summary
- The Women’s Center Facilitator will be responsible for organizing and implementing group psychosocial activities at the women center including skills and knowledge building activities and recreational activities. She is overall lead in community mobilization for GBV awareness and sensitization at community level of the project sites in Damboa,
Major Responsibilities
- In coordination with beneficiaries, identify relevant skills building and recreational activities to be conducted at the women friendly spaces and draw up a schedule for activity implementation
- In coordination with volunteers / partners a weekly schedule for activities in the women center.
- Identify and make a requisition for all materials required to conduct Women Friendly Space activities
- Organize feedback sessions each quarter with beneficiaries of WFS activities to identify strengths and weaknesses of the space and identify solutions for sharing with GBV manager for improvement.
- Coordinate with the case worker to ensure survivors who have been referred to the women center receive timely and quality services.
- In coordination with the GBV Manager, identify barriers to GBV and develop subsequent messages to overcome the barriers
- In coordination with women, leaders / SEMA / NEMA organize and oversee the implementation on calendar day celebrations such as 16 days of activism, international women’s day, day of the African child, international day of the girl child etc.
- Conduct training and coaching sessions for volunteers / partners to deliver appropriate GBV messages to community members.
- Supervise community volunteers / partners during field work to ensure correct GBV messages are disseminated to the community.
- Conduct weekly meetings with volunteers / partners to collect sensitization reports, develop messages for the following week.
- Organize and implement bi weekly discussions with men in the community on GBV related topics
- Organize and implement monthly discussion sessions with adolescents on GBV related topics

Job Title: GBV Case Worker
Location: Damboa, Borno
Job Summary
- The Women’s Center Case Worker will be responsible for case management and psycho-social support of vulnerable women, including survivors of violence, in the project sites in Maiduguri
Major Responsibilities
- Provide direct, one-on-one and ongoing case management services, including safety planning
- Provide direct, one-on-one emotional support to survivors throughout case management process including final case evaluation and closure
- Provide referrals for survivors to other services including child protection and specialized mental health services, accompany of survivors where appropriate and conduct follow- up to ensure appropriate services have been provided to the survivor.
- Identify gaps in referral services and report these gaps to the GBV Manager for action.
- Liaise with community volunteers for purposes of survivor follow-up as part of case management to individual survivors.
- Ensure survivor-centered services, including adherence to guiding principles of respect, confidentiality, safety and security and non-discrimination
- Complete and maintain case management records to maximize confidentiality and safety
- Participate in case review meetings and referral coordination meetings if needed
- Submit case management reports on a weekly and monthly basis
- Conduct an analysis of trends of GBV incidences and related information on a quarterly basis and present report to the GBV manager for advocacy and program future program
