Job Title: Borno Agricultural Development Initiative (BADI) Intern

Project Description

  • Borno Agricultural Development Initiative (BADI) is one of 3 projects that make up Mercy Corps Markets, Agricultural Livelihood and Livestock (MALL) Programme. The specific goal of the BADI Project is to introduce food insecure communities to sustainable, context-appropriate, smart agricultural practices and to catalyse the market for seeds and other agricultural markets in Borno State.

Intern Responsibilities

  • Support program team in BADI project management and administration.
  • Support the program Assistant in ensuring that BADI program works according to plan.
  • Assist and support the program team in mobilization and sensitization of community members.
  • Support in conducting registration and trainings to SHF and VAs.
  • Work with program officer in facilitation of community meetings and engagement.
  • Support the team in raising PRs and other Procurement process.
  • Support program team in program file update as well as other duties assign.

Learning Objectives – At the end of the internship period, the intern should have acquired the following skills and knowledge:

Learning goals:

  • Develop a working knowledge on program intervention.
  • Understand process of program filling tree
  • Attend trainings and workshop on VSLA methodology.
  • Have better knowledge on Good Agricultural Practice (GAP)
  • Increase knowledge on Farmers Business School (FBS)
  • Increase knowledge on permaculture, sack/backyard gardening and hydroponics
  • Develop competencies on program implementation and management
  • Increase knowledge on extension services

Requirements
Ideal Candidate should possess the following Qualifications:

  • A minimum of NCE, Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
  • Excellent Communication skills
  • A demonstrated ability to multitask and process information into action in a timely manner
  • Ability to have a team drive.
  • Fluency in English Language, Hausa and any other language spoken in Borno State

Working Conditions

  • The intern will be expected to work 40 hours a week
  • For the duration of this internship assignment the intern will be paid a monthly allowance of N60,000 subjected to 5%WHT and health insurance.

Project Description

  • The Agricultural Livelihood and Market Intervention (ALMRI) project is a Mercy corps / GIZ partnership project to implement an intervention that targets both food security and livelihood in Borno State by leveraging key intervention areas to help agricultural markets and livelihoods recover
  • The goal of the intervention is Agricultural livelihoods and market in Borno State are revitalized, targeting 4500 farmers, 20 extension workers, 80 input suppliers and 225 small association.

Job Title: Program Assistant/Extension Support – Agricultural Livelihood and Market Recovery Intervention (ALMRI)

Program / Department Summary

  • Agricultural Livelihood and Market Recovery Intervention (ALMRI) is one of the projects under Market Agricultural Livelihoods and Livestock (MALL) of Mercy Corps Nigeria. The ALMRI program aims to facilitate the recovery of agricultural livelihoods and markets in the context of Northeast Nigeria.
  • The positions will be based in Biu and Maiduguri/Mafa with travel to project sites on regular basis. The project works with vulnerable IDPs, returnees and the host community and other stakeholders.

General Position Summary

  • The program assistant-extension support will assist the program teams in the day to day implementation of all program activities in the areas of intervention especially on the field with small holder farmers. They would also spend some time researching and developing plans for sustainable farming.

Essential Job Functions

  • Formulate and implement projects that strengthen agricultural/rural extension and provide technical assistance in capacity development of agriculture innovation systems.
  • Prepare advocacy materials and documents to support the strengthening of agriculture innovation systems and support services.
  • Provide technical advice on design elements to strengthen and reform extension systems.
  • Provide support in the organization and delivery of technical workshops, consultations, seminars and training sessions on conceptual and practical aspects of extension and rural knowledge institution improvements.
  • Contribute to the promotion of extension reforms and capacity development for extension/advisory services with special attention to demand-led, pluralistic, decentralized, market-orientated, and participatory approaches that meet the diverse needs of smallholders and rural people, especially women and marginal groups.
  • Contribute to the preparation of studies, position papers and conceptual frameworks that strengthen extension systems and agriculture innovation systems.
  • Maintain networks of collaboration with technical specialists to gather information and promote awareness of technical issues to improve extension systems and advisory services.
  • Propagate new, more effective farming methods based on the latest research. This may include research on how to farm with nature for good results now and in future.
  • Work directly works with farmers and companies related to agriculture
  • Provide agriculture extension service support to focal farming households
  • Support the development of increased market linkages for focal farming households
  • Coordinate the establishment of kitchen gardens and scaling of successful approaches
  • Prepare field visit reports
  • Advise farmers to adopt best farming practices
  • Represent MCN ALMRI project in the cluster/donor meetings
  • Lead stakeholder dialogue and consultation meetings with project communities
  • Provide relevant training and skills development to community members on conservation agriculture and on-farm water management
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Educational qualification in relevant field required (Sociology, Psychology, Economics and Business Administration)
  • 1 year of experience working on the development, implementation, administration and compliance of a field-based international development or humanitarian programs required.
  • Ability to prepare concise reports.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience working with multiple stakeholders to identify beneficiaries according to criteria.
  • Experience representing the organization and its interests to a diverse range of local stakeholders.
  • Excellent oral, written and computer skills.
  • Fluency in English, Hausa along with Kanuri and Bura is required.

Job Title: Procurement Assistant

Program / Department Summary

  • The Procurement Department is committed to implementing and maintaining the highest standards of efficiency and integrity in the purchase of goods and services. The overriding objective for all Mercy Corps procurement activity is the prompt and effective provision of materials and services to Mercy Corps’ beneficiary populations in compliance with donor specifications.
  • General Position Summary
  • The Procurement Assistant is responsible for facilitating the procurement aspects of Mercy Corps’ logistic operation.  Working closely with Programs, Administration, Finance and Logistics. The Procurement Assistant is instrumental in supporting program activities through his/her services.

Essential Job Functions
Procurement management:

  • Daily coordination of MC procurement activities.
  • Has a full understanding of MC procurement policies and formats. Assists, as needed in training staff on these policies.
  • Assists staff as needed on creating clear and understandable purchase requests and other documentation.
  • Collects quotations and bids from the market for PR-s as assigned by the Procurement Officer – as per Mercy Corps standards and formats.
  • Interact with Vendors during collection of quotations – explain Mercy Corps formats and ensure that vendors will use the provided forms.
  • Ensure fair competition and strictly adhere to MC procurement rules regarding vendor relations as described below:
    • Always accord prompt and courteous reception and fair and equal treatment to all vendors/suppliers and their representatives.
    • Provide equal opportunity for vendors/suppliers to make price and specification quotations.
    • Guarantee the confidentiality of all specifications and price quotations made by vendors/suppliers.
    • Decline to take advantage of vendors/suppliers’ errors, and show consideration for vendors/suppliers’ difficulties by co-operating with them whenever possible.
    • Avoid subjecting vendors/suppliers to needless expense or inconvenience when requesting quotations or returning goods.
    • Explain as clearly and fully as possible to vendors/suppliers the reason(s) for the rejection of their bids/proposals.
    • Remain scrupulously free of obligations to any vendor/supplier.
    • Remain informed about sources of supply, methods, services and materials and encourage vendors/suppliers to test and develop improved or expanded products and services.
    • Inform vendors/suppliers about current and anticipated requirements.
    • If, for any reason, one vendor/supplier is permitted to re-quote (submit a revised quotation), all competitors should be given the same opportunity. Re-quoting should be kept to an absolute minimum.
  • Prepare the required documentation of supplies and transactions are completed to MC standards.
  • Prepare and Maintain the PR Master list.
  • Responsible for filing and archiving of procurement documents
  • Assist Operations and office staff with procurement activities, as required.
  • Identify assets during the course of procurement and notify the Asset Controller on receipts of assets.
  • The Procurement Assistant will conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to Mercy Corps and to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission.

  • Good computer skills on MS Office programs, especially in MS Excel, MS Word
  • A demonstrated ability to multi-task and process information into action as to not delay program activities.
  • A clear understanding of procurement ethics and donor compliance is essential.
