Job Title: Environmental Coordinator

Position Description

  • Manage regulatory compliance of Mine and Quarry operations (FME, FMMSD, NESREA, State Ministries of Environment and related regulatory agencies as applicable).
  • Co-ordinate environmental management activities associated with Mine/Quarry operations in line with DIL’ HSSE Policy and Environmental Management Standards as well as Industry and International standards and guidelines.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assists in the preparation of permits, environmental studies and/or regulatory reports related to environmental compliance and liaise with external agencies in this regard.
  • Assist, formulate, document and implement environmental monitoring routines and quality control procedures in compliance with regulatory requirements of applicable permits and DIL’s policies and standards.
  • Review and provide input into assessment of Mines/Quarry exploration and development proposals.
  • Develop and update monitoring and reporting protocols in accordance with relevant Federal and State statutes and regulations.
  • Provides input and assist the HSE Manager and Operations personnel in the planning and response to environmental issues and concerns.
  • Initiate and oversee conduction of environmental monitoring programs.
  • Supervise activities of external contractors/consultants involved in environmental assessments and rehabilitation/reclamation projects.
  • Develop and deliver environmental awareness workshops and training to Mines personnel.
  • Participate in incident investigation and preparation of formal reports on findings including recommendations to HSE Manager.
  • Review and complete environmental audits at Operational sites and identify areas for improvement.
  • Maintain clear and complete documentations for reference purpose during environmental operations.
  • Produce environmental reports to Mines Management and relevant stakeholders as required.
  • Prepare annual environmental monitoring and compliance reports for submission to Mines stakeholders.
  • Assists HSE Manager with the review of compliance, data trends and reporting. Assists in the development and communication of improvement plans related to environmental management.
  • Carry out other duties and responsibilities as requested by the HSE Manager.

Desired Qualification/Preferred Competencies

  • Higher National Diploma (HND) or Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental, Biological or Earth Sciences or Engineering
  • An advanced degree would be an advantage.
  • 6-10 years of relevant environmental management experience with also minimum background in Health & Safety
  • Certification in ISO 14001 Environmental Management System or equivalent.Working knowledge of Federal and State environmental regulations and permit requirements.
  • Working knowledge of HSE Management Systems.
  • Demonstrate high level of qualitative and technical report writing skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and organisations skills.
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft tools (Word, PowerPoint and Excel).
  • Environmental experience in mining and/or construction industries would be an advantage.Willingness to relocate
  • Willingness to work in remote terrain.
  • Successful candidates will be expected to work outside of normal hours for immediate responses to environmental issues and emergency responses.

Job Title: HSE Manager, Mines

Position Description

  • To support the Mine Management team to prevent and/or control HSE impacts and risks associated with mine operations.

Job Responsibilities

  • Monitor changes in HSE legislation and report these changes to Mines management.
  • Manage the HSE Department to ensure appropriate business plans are developed, implemented, measured, reviewed and reported on.
  • Provide leadership and technical support to the HSE Department;
  • Manage relationships with key stakeholders such as Management team, direct reports, community leaders, environmental department, government officials and DIL’s HSSE department
  • Define HSE targets and relevant leading and lagging HSE KPIs and monitor changes in achieving targets.
  • Review capital / budgetary requirements for HSE interventions, to meet long term objectives of the Company.
  • Provide leadership necessary to ensure that employees and any contractors adhere to DIL’s HSE Policies and Standards.
  • Provide support and advisory to Mines Management on HSE related issues.
  • Actively contribute to HSE policy and new initiatives and implement change as directed by Mines Director.
  • Assist in identifying training needs and provide relevant training interventions.
  • Ensure training and coaching is provided to all HSE department employees.
  • Mentor line management to enable them to take accountability for HSE issues in their area of responsibility
  • Develop and implement HSE audit programs
  • Carry out analysis of accident/incident statistics, identifying trends and suggesting improvement plans
  • Research and share relevant information with stakeholders on global best practice.
  • Contribute to the embedding of a culture of compliance and ethical behavior in Mines/Quarry operations.
  • Monitor the effective implementation of appropriate HSE management system procedures and update them in line with changes in regulations and business objectives.
  • Monitor compliance reviews, general risk assessments and any other safety assessments

Desired Qualification/Preferred Competencies

  • Higher National Diploma (HND) or Bachelor’s Degree in Sciences, Engineering or Environmental related discipline
  • Advanced degree is preferred
  • 12 years of relevant HSE experience
  • HSE experience in Mining/ Construction industries is preferred.
  • NEBOSH certification or equivalent.
  • Auditor Certified for ISO 45001 or ISO 14001 Standards.
  • Member of an internationally recognized HSE Professional body is preferred.Demonstrable experience in the application of HSE management systems.
  • Very good working knowledge of applicable HSE legislation, occupational health & safety and environmental hazard identification and risk assessment, occupational health and safety and environmental accident and illness prevention and protection techniques and international standards;
  • Sound project Management, negotiation/dispute mitigation and presentation skill.
  • Proven experience in the supervision/management of professional and administrative staff.
  • Track record in influencing positive organizational change inside organization;
  • Strong communication, leadership and mentoring skills
  • Excellent use of Microsoft tools (Word, PowerPoint and Excel).Willingness to travel frequently.
  • Willingness to work in a remote terrain.

Job Title: HSE Officer

Location: Kogi

Position Description

  • To monitor site implementation of DIL’s policies, programs, and initiatives related to H&S systems; including performance of the work necessary to ensure adherence to safety regulations, completion of safety training, and attainment of business values and objectives.

Job Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance of site operations with DIL’s HSSE policies and standards as well as applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in internal risk assessment processes.
  • Routinely inspect the facilities, machinery and equipment in order to identify and correct potential hazards and to ensure compliance with safety regulation and DIL’s policies and standards.
  • Routinely monitor the workforce for unsafe behaviours and coach employees on the correct behaviours.
  • Record Unsafe Acts / fe Acts / Unsafe Conditions, incidents, accidents and audits findings.
  • Participate to accidents and incidents investigations.
  • Continuously engage with mine staff on Health and Safety, i.e Tool Box Talks, inspection reporting, weekly reporting, site management reviews, etc..
  • Coordinate actively with other departments to improve work conditions according to DIL’s polices and standards.
  • Accompany and engage Federal and State Regulators / Inspectors during compliance monitoring visits to the mine.
  • Participate in HSE related meetings; safety awareness campaigns and external HSE audits.
  • Compile, analyse and interpret accident statistical data, and recommend process and product safety features that will reduce employee exposure to chemical, physical and biological work hazards.
  • Carry out other duties and responsibilities as requested by the HSE Manager.

Desired Qualification/Preferred Competencies

  • Higher National Diploma (HND) or Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental, Biological or Earth Sciences or Engineering
  • 5 years of relevant HSE experience
  • NEBOSH certificate or equivalent. Sound verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good communication skills and problem solving abilities.
  • Ability to work under limited or no supervision.
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft tools (Word, PowerPoint and Excel).
  • HSE experience in mining and/or construction industries would be an advantage
  • An understanding of health & safety as well as environmental management.Willingness to relocate.
  • Willingness to work in a remote terrain.
