Job Summary

  • We are currently looking to fill the role of Deputy Head of WASH Department who will be responsible for ensuring the implementation of WASH, non-food items and emergency shelter strategies for Action Against Hunger in the Northeast of Nigeria.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analysis of the WASH situation in Borno and Yobe states.
  • Ensure effective integration and coherence of ACF’s WASH activities – technical designs, constructions, capacity building – in accordance with the ACF country strategy and the National Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency and Ministry of Water Resources.
  • Support the WASH Head of Department to ensure cohesion of the WASH teams within themselves and with the other sector programs.
  • Together with the WASH Head of Department, guarantee the technical quality of the construction activities (with respect to ACF and Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency designs and guidelines).
  • Review and update technical designs for the construction of water and sanitation facilities.
  • Represent ACF in relevant meetings and conferences when requested;
  • Encourage the collaboration with other sector agencies to support ACF advocacy activities related to WASH issues (follow up on advocacy plans, press releases), in coordination with the WASH Head of Department.
  • Collaborate and communicate with other Technical and Support Heads of Department, Programme Deputy Managers, and any other ACF resource people in order to ensure the coherence of activities and reports in terms of ACF WASH strategy.
  • Participate/organize weekly coordination team meetings and any other general team or strategy meetings.
  • Reporting on attended meetings or training to share with programme managers and coordination team if necessary.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Engineering (Civil, Water, Construction or Hydrology), Public Health or Social Sciences.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in the international NGO context with a sound knowledge of WASH issues in crisis contexts.
  • Knowledge of humanitarian principles, Sphere and HAP Standards and other international humanitarian WASH guidelines.
  • Technical design skills using AutoCAD or Arch CAD.
  • Proposal development and reporting skills.
  • Good anticipation and planning skills, especially in changing work contexts;
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to enforce procedures.
  • Experience in communicating in different cultural contexts and work environments with a wide diversity of cultures.
  • Experience in attending and contributing to meetings with government and other agencies.
  • Ability to produce clear written and oral communications in English.
  • Good computer skills with the ability to use Microsoft word and excel.
  • High-level diplomacy skills is a plus.
  • Ability to work with little or no supervision and attention to detail.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to the field for program monitoring and supportive visits.

Starting Basic Salary and Benefits

  • NGN812,290 monthly (excluding other benefits)
