Job Title: Adjunct Faculty – English Literature

Location: Lagos

Role Overview

  • NUTM invites applications from highly qualified and dedicated individuals to join our faculty as Adjunct Faculty in English Literature. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching undergraduate courses in English literature, guiding students in critical analysis, and fostering a deep appreciation for literary works. This position is part-time and offers flexibility in scheduling.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Course development and instruction:

  • Teach undergraduate courses in English literature, including survey courses, genre-specific courses, and specialized topics.
  • Develop course syllabi, reading lists, and instructional materials that align with the university’s curriculum and learning outcomes.
  • Engage students in close reading, critically analysing, and interpreting literary texts from various historical periods and cultural contexts.
  • Foster an inclusive and interactive classroom environment that encourages discussion, debate, and the exchange of ideas.

Mentorship and Student Evaluation:

  • Assess and provide constructive feedback on student essays, research papers, and presentations to enhance their analytical and writing skills.
  • Support students in developing research and analytical abilities through library resources, digital databases, and other scholarly tools.
  • Encourage students to explore interdisciplinary connections between literature and other fields of study.

Research and Departmental Duties

  • Stay updated with current research, literary criticism, and theoretical approaches in the field of English literature.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, faculty development activities, and university committees as required.

Preferred Candidate

  • A Master’s Degree in English Literature or a related field is required. A doctoral degree is preferred.
  • Demonstrated expertise and a deep knowledge of English literature across different periods, genres, and cultural traditions.
  • Previous teaching experience at the university level is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills to effectively engage students in literary analysis and critical thinking.
  • Ability to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Familiarity with digital resources, online databases, and research tools in the field of literary studies.
  • Strong research and writing skills, with a record of scholarly publications or conference presentations preferred.
  • Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary approaches and the ability to connect literature to other academic disciplines.
  • Commitment to promoting the value of literature in fostering empathy, cultural understanding, and critical literacy.
