Role Summary/Purpose
The Commercial Counsel will be responsible for supporting various projets and the busnisess teams across West Africa. The Commercial Counsel will also be reponsible for identifying and providing solutions to minimize/mitigate risks. The CC would also ensure compliance with the internal risk screening process and Delegation of Authority, under the supervision and guidance of the Executive Counsel, West Africa.
Essential Responsibilities
• Review proposed terms and conditions contained in customer invitations to tender and contracts, recommending changes based on the GE terms of sale/risk profile, prepare exceptions/qualifications, and participate in subsequent contract negotiations
• Provide support regarding terms and conditions, risk analysis, interpretation and development of strategies to mitigate risks, and formulation, review and evaluation of contract amendments
• Represent business interests in customer and GE internal meetings including but not limited to Project Emerald and other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Executive Counsel
• Report risks, mitigation, and resolution to management via business segment risk reviews • Manage and enforce the “battle of the forms” procedures and the use of special terms and conditions for small deals
• Supporting the Sourcing function across the WAF hub in the negotiation and standardization of key commercial contracts.
• Lead in the development and maintenance of a regulatory management database for the West African Hub
• Litigation and outside counsel management
• Develop, Support and enforce GE’s compliance Program
Qualifications/Requirements
• LLB, BL, Juris Doctorate or equivalent from an accredited law school
• 7 to 10 years’ legal experience in business law at a premier law firm and/or corporate legal department
• Member in good standing of a Bar Association
• Must be fluent in French & English
• A valid NYSC discharge or exemption certificate will be required.
• Must have valid authorization to work full-time without any restriction in Nigeria
Desired Characteristics
• Extensive knowledge of law and commercial legal practice in the region, some global experience desirable
• Prior experience in database management including data entry and data reports is preferred
• Ability to comprehend and analyze terms and conditions including the ability to recognize and assess impacts on project execution
• Strong negotiation and presentation skills
• Ability to handle many complex issues concurrently
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
• Strong business and financial acumen
•Ability to speak French will be a key added advantage
