The International NGO Safety Organisation (INSO), founded in 2011, is a British charity that supports the safety of aid workers by establishing safety coordination platforms in insecure contexts. INSO provides registered NGOs with a range of free services including real-time incident tracking, analytical reports, safety related data and mapping, crisis management support, staff orientations and training.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

 

Job Title: Training Officer
Location: 
Abuja

INSO Nigeria Country Office

  • Since becoming registered in Nigeria, INSO has developed a strong country wide approach, supporting NGOs working on Lake Chad Basin Crisis from all neighbouring countries. The coordination office operates from Abuja overseeing two operational offices in Maiduguri, Nigeria and in Maroua, Cameroon.
  • We are seeking a qualified and experienced individual to join our team as Training Officer to be based in Abuja with regular travel to the field.

Job Summary

  • The purpose of this position is to facilitate and deliver high quality training and to support the Training Manager in the ongoing improvement of INSO LCB’s training courses.

Major Responsibilities
Training Facilitation and Development:

  • Support the line manager in course design, preparation, and delivery
  • Take the lead in delivering classroom presentations and facilitate engaging training courses as directed by the line manager, to include:
  • Hostile Environment Individual Safety Training (HEIST)
  • Security Management (Basic and Advanced)
  • Crisis Management
  • Hostile Environment First Aid Training-First Responder (HEFAT-FR)
  • Other relevant training, as directed
  • Regularly travel to Maiduguri and the northeast to help deliver security management and crisis management courses
  • Participate in the development of new training courses and adjustment of existing courses with the line manager using adult learning methodologies

Provide logistical support:

  • Manage the course participant lists as directed by the line manager
  • Assist in producing training presentations, course handouts, facilitator notes, lesson plans, and aids as directed by the line manager
  • When appropriate, assist the Training Assistant in managing training course and facility logistical demands

Guide the training strategy:

  • Participate proactively in the development of INSO’s regional training strategy

Monitor course feedback systems:

  • Support the line manager in monitoring and evaluation of training delivery and impact
  • Support the line manager further developing course appraisal and feedback systems

Other responsibilities:

  • When appropriate (e.g. in the absence of the Training Assistant), work closely with INSO LCB’s logistics, human resources and administration, and finance departments to manage the training program’s requirements
  • Be prepared to carry out other reasonable duties that may arise, as requested by line management

Mandatory Requirements

  • Degree in education or a post-graduate diploma in a relevant discipline or equivalent relevant practical experience.
  • At least one year of experience in training delivery
  • Familiarity with the philosophy, priorities, and principles of humanitarian NGOs
  • Proven presentation/facilitator skills using adult learning methodologies
  • Ability to carry out basic administrative and logistical tasks
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Professional working proficiency in English

Preferred Characteristics:

  • At least one year of humanitarian experience in a safety or security management role
  • Political, social, and historical knowledge of the region
  • Security/safety training course attendance
  • First aid qualification
  • User knowledge of GPS, Thuraya satellite phone, and VHF communications
  • Professional working fluency in Hausa. Knowledge of other local languages is an advantage.

Job Title: GIS Officer
Location: 
Abuja

The coordination office operates from Abuja overseeing two operational offices in Maiduguri, Nigeria and in Maroua, Cameroon.
  • We are seeking a qualified and experienced individual to join our team as GIS Officer to be based in Abuja with occasional travel to North-East Nigeria.

Job Summary

  • Under the supervision of the INSO Information Manager, the successful candidate will be focused on meeting the mapping and spatial analysis needs within INSO.
  • The GIS Officer position is a highly rewarding role, offering a unique opportunity to work in a close-knit team giving support in relation to the provision of safety services to the NGO community.

Major Responsibilities

  • Ensure INSO’s spatial data is well-organised and kept up-to-date in a constantly involving context
  • Conception, preparation and production of Standard Delivery Services of INSO mapping products, including the design of a standard in-house format for map products.
  • Identify NGO map information needs and opportunities, in collaboration with the operations team.
  • Produce and maintain high-quality, security-relevant static maps, including: security incident mapping, area of influence mapping, detailed risk maps for key roads and cities, NGO presence maps.
  • Work closely with the Information Manager to ensure accurate and regularly updated/dynamic linkages between GIS maps and INSO’s Incident Database.
  • Provide training to Nigeria operations staff on GIS mapping software and methods at a basic level.

Mandatory Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Geography, GIS or a relevant discipline.
  • 2 years of GIS work experience, preferably with an NGO, with demonstrable experience in high quality map production.
  • Excellent command of ArcGIS (preferably with ArcGIS Pro) or QGIS software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts and approaches relevant to GIS and the management of information in crises contexts.
  • Displayed capacity to understand the work and nature of NGOs will be considered as an asset.
  • Be systematic, proactive, innovative, self-motivated and detail-oriented.
  • Fluency in English (working language) with good writing capacity.

Preferred Characteristics:

  • Strong cartographic skills, including the development of templates and adherence to cartographic standards are highly desirable.
  • Experience in ArcGIS Pro.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Illustrator.
  • Knowledge of analytical software (e.g. R, Stata, SPSS, Tableau).
  • Experience in using programming languages (e.g. R, Python) in automating GIS workflows.
  • Knowledge of online mapping platforms (e.g. ArcGIS online, Carto).

Job Title: IT Officer

INSO Nigeria Country Office

The coordination office operates from Abuja overseeing two operational offices in Maiduguri, Nigeria and in Maroua, Cameroon.
  • We are seeking a qualified and experienced individual to join our team as IT Officer to be based in Abuja with regular travel to NE Nigeria.

Job Summary

  • The purpose of this position is to ensure the IT and internet needs of all INSO staff are efficiently met. The IT Officer also supports for basic administration management, such as procurement and purchases of IT-related items.
  • This position reports to the INSO Information Manager.

Major Responsibilities

  • Conception, preparation and implementation of the office IT set-up, under the supervision of the Information Manager.
  • Ensure all INSO users have access to all relevant licensed software, including antivirus, MS office and GIS software.
  • Assess the security threat to INSO IT systems and ensure it is appropriately mitigated.
  • Ensure that emails and key electronic files are backed up once a month.
  • Support the Information Manager in all IT-related tasks.
  • Ensure maximum performance of INSO internet.
  • Install and configure appropriate software and functions according to specifications.
  • Develop and maintain local networks in ways that optimize performance.

Mandatory Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Information Systems, Computer Sciences or a relevant discipline.
  • 3 years of IT work experience, preferably with an NGO.
  • Displayed capacity to understand the work and nature of NGOs will be considered as an asset.
  • Experience in network support, software installation and hardware maintenance, with good general IT knowledge (network set-ups, hardware, trouble shooting).
  • Ability to think creatively in terms of tool and process development.
  • Be systematic, proactive, innovative, self-motivated and detail oriented.
  • Fluency in English (working language) with good writing capacity.

Preferred Characteristics:

  • 3 years of work experience with an INGO as an IT officer.
  • In depth understanding of diverse computer systems and networks.

  • Ability to prioritize and work with limited supervision.
  • Ability to manage and work to multiple tight deadlines.
