Scope of Work
- The Nutrition Clinical Officer- is responsible for overseeing all Nutrition activities for IRC supported health facilities and catchment communities in Gwoza LGAs .
- Responsibilities will include day to day supports to Nutritional activities in the health facilities and their catchment communities, monitoring of activities, report making, coordination with other sectors and government authorities as well as close collaboration with the Nutrition unit at the state MOH & health facility staff and managers.
- The Nutrition Officer will have no line management responsibilities and reports to the Nutrition Manager.
- The position will be based in Gworza with regular trips to IRC’s health and Nutrition programs in Borno state and other parts of Nigeria as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- In collaboration with the other Nutrition program staff in Nigeria, oversee the implementation of Nutrition projects implemented by IRC Nigeria (Gwoza).
- In collaboration with the Nutrition manager and the Health & Nutrition Coordinator, ensure that Nutrition programs utilize standardized protocols, policies and guidelines, as outlined by the Nigeria Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) and WHO. Ensure that all Nutrition activities are consistent with established best practices.
- Promote the quality of the IRC’s health & Nutrition programs by following the measures put in place in collaboration with other staff and the IRC health unit.
- Ensure sound data collection and information management systems are in place for ongoing monitoring of health & Nutrition programme activities
- Participate in the design of robust M&E plans and design/adapt Nutrition information systems including surveillance systems for the IRC health & nutrition programs in Nigeria
- Contribute to the growth of the IRC nutrition programme in Nigeria through quality implementation of project activities, adequate monitoring and timely reporting as needed, working in conjunction with other colleagues in the IRC Nigeria program.
- Conduct regular supportive supervision to all supported health facilities and catchment communities, provide mentoring and technical support and appropriate feedback as needed.
- Work with the nutrition manager and Health & Nutrition Coordinator to ensure appropriate use of programme resources
- Organise planned trainings for health & Nutrition staff and ensure that FMOH and WHO guidelines are used for all trainings which should be delivered in a quality manner.
- Support the set up of use of FMOH clinical guidelines in all health facilities, providing mentoring as required to improve compliance.
- Follow all IRC guidelines, programme and budget management tools
- Ensure a good working relationship with all stakeholders involved in service provision to supported health facilities and catchment communities in Gwoza LGA.
- Ensure the consistent use of the IRC grant management guidelines during programme implementation.
Qualifications
- College Diploma in Nursing /Midwifery/Clinical Medicine with emphasis in Nutrition
- At least 2 Years work experience in Nutrition programs both at clinical and community based programs and other primary Health care components is preferable
- Thorough knowledge and understanding Nutrition Policy of Nigeria
- Previous experience working in Northern Nigeria, willingness to work in Northern Nigeria
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills
- Experience delivering Nutrition and related trainings to health staff using national or WHO guidelines
- NGO work experience is an advantage
- Should be able to use Microsoft Office especially MS-Word, Excel,Powerpoint

Job Overview/Summary
- The Nutrition Outreach Nurse shall support the Nutrition Officer in the the implementation of daily nutrition activities and implementation of CMAM program in MMC and Jere LGAs in line with National Guidelines and improving maternal and child health and nutrition, promoting appropriate IYCN practices and hygiene and sanitation.
- The post holder will work in close collaboration with the government staff, the community and those of the local Partners in implementing the nutrition program..
Major Responsibilities
Program Management, Technical Quality, and Strategy:
- The nutrition outreach Nurse will work together with the nutrition officer and other IRC sectors in implementing CMAM, outreach program and MIYCN activities in MMC and Jere .He/she will Work together with the health facility staff in developing the movement and work plans for the respective health facilities.
- Work with MOH staff in conducting outreach especially in hard to reach areas where security situation permits
- Formation, training and supervising the community Health Volunteers to carry out routine MUAC screening at community level and work closely with other outreach staff in screening of SAM children at the OTP sites and facilitate referral of sick children to the stabilization centre.
- Identification and training of the community in active case finding, referral and defaulter tracing at community level.
- To ensure that program are implemented in accordance with IRC policies and procedures.
- Ensure all criteria are respected and understood by the teams, including admission, discharge and transfer to and from the OTP/Stabilization centre
- Ensure comprehensive health checks and treatment according to the protocols
- Review the forms completed by staff to ensure completion, accuracy and coherence
- Ensure adequate availability of all medical and therapeutic supplies and ensure stock is pre-positioned as planned by discussing with supply chain
- Follow-up and provide feedback to the Nutrition manager on the amount and quality of the treatment supplies if it does not comply with specified quality standards.
- Follow and respect the current protocols specially drug administration i.e. for de-worming, malaria, polio and measles , and micronutrient mineral/ Vitamin A supplements targeting children and PLW
- Add the activities linked to health and nutrition education in the protocols

Program Development:
- Together with the nutrition manager support in the development of an effective outreach strategy that will enhance effective and comprehensive service provision.

- Respond to inquiries regarding the technical aspects of the program admission and discharge whenever necessary at the OTP sites.
- Follow-up and ensure the field team interacts with the beneficiaries properly.
Research, Learning and Analysis:
- Analyze the nutritional situation
- Compile the statistical data (admission, default, cured, absent, death) and draft a report on activities.
Coordination & Representation:
- Establish good relationship with the Buluma’s and LGA authorities and community leaders
- Establish a network with the other actors in the working area (I/NGO)
- Establish a good understanding of the program within the community

Qualifications

Work Experience:

- Addition nutrition training in CMAM and IYCF is an added advantage
- Demonstrated Managerial/Leadership Competencies:

- Adolescent girls and boys are gravely underserved in humanitarian emergencies, particularly during the acute phase of response.
- They are often inserted into programming designed for younger children or into adult programming, where their age-specific needs are not understood or met.
- The Adolescent Protection Assistants will act as focal points for adolescent girls within Women’s Protection and Empowerment (WPE and adolescent girls and boys within Child Protection programming in Borno State.
Summary Statement of Duties and Responsibilities
- The Adolescent Protection Assistant will work within Child Protection response team based in safe spaces providing case management and psychosocial support services.
- Under the supervision of experienced Child Protection Officers, the Adolescent Protection Assistants will deliver the IRC’s Supporting Adolescents and their Families in Emergencies (SAFE) resource pack content to adolescent boys and younger girls.
- The Assistants will also facilitate skills building sessions with female and male caregivers of adolescent girls and boys. The Assistants will be active participants in identifying, documenting and sharing learning from this approach which be systematically gathered to inform a global resource toolkit for SAFE.
Key Responsibilities
The Adolescent Protection Assistant will work within a Child Protection response team based in safe spaces providing case management and psychosocial support services. Within this broader response team the Adolescent Protection Assistant will be required to:
- Work as part of a Child Protection or team in a safe space to provide support to younger adolescent girls or boys as part of broader response services
- Participate in an initial SAFE approach training and engage in ongoing skills building using SAFE learning materials with supervisor
- With support from supervisors, mentor and coach the community volunteer responsible for co-facilitating sessions with adolescent girls or boys
- Lead community engagement activities to introduce SAFE activities to female and male community leaders and caregivers
- Conduct initial assessments to identify the risks and needs of adolescent girls and boys
- Work closely with other project staff to identify adolescent girls, adolescent boys, and female and male caregivers to participate in SAFE learning activities
- Act as lead facilitator to deliver sessions twice a week for adolescent girls or boys together with a community volunteer facilitator
- Facilitate sessions once a week for female or male caregivers
- Provide psychological first aid and support to adolescent girls or boys who disclose experiences of violence and support referral to access either child protection or WPE response services
- Facilitate feedback meetings with adolescent girls and boys, female and male community stakeholders and caregivers and share feedback with supervisor
- Complete weekly reports on project activities, including documenting feedback from participants of SAFE sessions and proactively sharing back lessons learned whilst facilitating the curricula
- Participate in debriefing sessions with supervisors and share reflections, lessons learned and recommendations to strengthen SAFE program approach
Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Education, Economics, another human development related field or equivalent of experience preferred.
- At least two years’ experience working to support children, adolescent girl and boys, women or parents and caregivers
- Experience with facilitation of group work with relevant populations
- A high level of motivation to assist adolescent girls and boys affected by humanitarian crisis
- A commitment to child protection and gender equality
- A learning attitude and willingness to increase skills and knowledge in the protection of adolescent girls and boys
- Experience as an active participate of social groups, with an understanding of group dynamics and processes.
