Job Title: Head of Structural Works
Location: Lagos, Nigeria
Responsibilities
- Champion all construction and welding activities which is an important part of construction, repair and maintenance work. Combine hands-on welding work with higher-level administrative and technical responsibilities. Plan, prepare, and execute welding projects in a variety of industrial settings.
- Prepare technical reports as result of research and development and preventive maintenance investigations.
- Establish welding procedures to guide production and welding personnel relating to specification restrictions, material processes, pre- and post-heating requirements which involve use of complex alloys, unusual fabrication methods, welding of critical joints, and complex post-heating requirements.
- Evaluate new developments in welding field for possible application to current welding problems or production processes.
- Guide corrosion and materials departments on the material selection with respect to welding.
- Ensure that welding traceability information are recorded, maintained and available in the required format for all welding activities to demonstrate achievement of deliverables.
- Develop welding specifications to ensure integrity of equipment and facilities used in company projects.
- Monitor the welding quality trough the analysis of the trends of Project Defect Rates and Welders Defect Rates prepared by QHSE department, proposing improvement actions.
- Direct and coordinate technical personnel in performing inspections to ensure workers’ compliance with established welding procedures, restrictions, and standards; in testing welds for conformance with national code requirements; or testing welding personnel for certification.
- Develop welding techniques, procedures, and application of welding equipment to problems involving fabrication of metals, utilizing knowledge of production specifications, properties and characteristics of metals and metal alloys, and engineering principles.
- Conduct research and development investigations to develop and test new fabrication processes and procedures, improve existing or develop new welding equipment, develop new or modify current welding methods, techniques, and procedures, discover new patterns of welding phenomena, or to correlate and substantiate hypotheses.
- Contact personnel of other agencies, engineering personnel, or clients to exchange ideas, information, or offer technical advice concerning welding matters.
- Perform experimental welding to evaluate new equipment, techniques, and materials.
Desired Skills and Experience
- Higher National Diploma (HND) or Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering or related discipline. Engineering trade qualification will be an added advantage.
- Minimum of 7 years of active experience in structural steel works with specialization in welding and steel construction.
- Experience using power tools, machinery and project management.
- Adequate record keeping, efficient reporting skill.
- Strong leadership, independent, motivator and discipline required, hands on organizer.
- Must be flexible and be a team player working closely with other departments to carry out preventive maintenance and set up an annual maintenance program.
- Ability to interact effectively with peers and supervisors.
- Physically fit and be dexterous.
- Agile and experienced in cramped or high spaces.
- Possess a good visual and must be good with number.
