Action Against Hunger works to save lives by combating hunger and diseases that threaten the lives of vulnerable communities, through nutrition, food security, water and sanitation, health and advocacy.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

 

Job Title: Community Mobilization Assistant

Location: Damaturu, Yobe
Starting date: As soon as possible
Direct Line Manager: WASH Officer

Objective 1

  • Support the WASH Officer to carry out Needs Assessment on WASH Activities at the LGA and Community Level.

Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • CLTS Communities Identification Need Assessment and Selection.
  • Site Identification for emergency Latrine construction.
  • Site Identification for VIP Latrine construction at facilities.
  • Communities Identification, Assessments and selection for Hygiene Promotion.

Objective 2

  • Providing support and supervision on WASH community mobilization activities at the LGA and community level.

Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Conducting direct sensitization meeting with community Leaders, Village Head, volunteers and caregivers in Communities within the LGA catchment areas to communicate details of AAH program activities with a specific focus on WASH.
  • Implementation of communities’ hygiene promotion and sanitation sensitization using CLTS, PHAST and CHAST approach through regular contract and exchange and facilitating Community level planning and decision-making processes.
  • Ensuring good condition between SMOH/LGA Health staff, Cvs and Water Users committee.

Objective 3

  • Assist the WASH Officer in context assessment and developing materials for Hygiene promotion.

Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Assist the WASH officer in conducting home visits and to the community (school, Health facilities, etc.) to identify gaps in term Hygiene, sanitation and use of water.
  • Assist the WASH officer in preparing training modules for the promotion of Hygiene in the communities ;
  • Assist the WASH officer in developing teaching tools adapted to different audiences: song, role play, games, meeting, and training course.
  • Assist identify targeted partners within the communities: school, Hospital, clinic, etc

Internal & External Relationship
Internal:

  • WASH Officer: Technical hierarchical relationship – exchange of information, collaboration, coordination

External:

  • Local governmental and non-governmental partners: As directed by WASH Officer exchange of information, coordination, training, assessment of  technical feasibilities
  • Local representatives of international aid organisations: As directed by the WASH Officer exchange of information.

Reporting Responsibilities

  • Weekly plan and report against the plan
  • Monthly field activity report.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a National Diploma in Health, Hygiene and Sanitation field, or 1 experience on related field.

Skills & Experience
Essential:

  • Previous experience in hygiene promotion and community mobilization
  • Motivated, open, creative, mature, responsible, flexible,
  • Two years relevant work experience
  • Willing and able to be based and travel regularly within remote areas, where services are limited.
  • Fluency in Kanuri
  • Commitment to AAH  mission, values and policy.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience of work in the humanitarian sector
  • Good knowledge of the intervention area/s and local economy
  • Previous experience with AAH.

Remuneration
Minimum Monthly Basic Salary: N109,897 per month.

Job Title: WASH Behavioral Change Communication (BCC) Officer

Location: Bade, Yobe
Starting Date: As Soon As Possible
Direct Line Manager: WASH Sector Manager

Objective 1

  • Development of behaviour change communication for hygiene and sanitation Strategies, tools and activities for WASH programmes

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • In coordination with Sector Manager, based on the project proposal and LFA, define the list of behaviours to be promoted through the project and the audience audiences to be targeted.
  • In coordination with Sector Manager, based on secondary data, survey results and observation evaluate the level of practice of the behaviors for each audience.
  • In condition with Sector Manager, identify main gaps in term of practice adoption in order to set priorities.
  • Ensure that formation research activities (ex: BA, FGB, interviews, PRA tools or case study.) are conducted understand why behaviors are not being adopted and to inform activity content, Tools/IEC and approach design, within the general guidance given by the proposal.
  • Ensure that the content and the key hygiene messages are coherent with nutrition and health promotion recommendations (IYCF in particular), integrate nutrition key messages within WASH activities when relevant.
  • Based on formative research results, set specific BCC goals (possible to use DBC/bridge to the activity or other BCC methodologies).
  • Develop a curriculum of activity and communication tools to achieve the BCC goals and address important determinants of behaviour change identified in the formative research.
  • Assess available mass media available for BCC (ex: radio, theatre, social media…) and propose a selection of relevant ones to develop initiatives through media. According to audience preference and access to these media and budget constraint.
  • Develop training curriculum and materials to train hygiene promoter, volunteers, partners on the new tools and BCC strategy produced.
  • Ensure supervision of quality of activity delivery to beneficiaries and provide constructive feedback to facilitators.
  • Ensure that all monitoring is done in line with the agreed monitoring format.
  • Continually assess emergency needs, as requested, especially taking in the broader perspective of public health.
  • Ensure that work meets with SPHERE minimum standards.
  • Assist the WASH Sector Manager with, and where required participate in community mobilization.
  • Ensure that all technical work reflects the needs and preferences of different target groups.

Objective 2

  • Train and build the capacity of staffs and partners.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure training of facilitators and hygiene promoters and volunteers on the content and communication skill to deliver the activity or curriculum design (directly or through cascade training).
  • Ensure constant coaching/training and supervision on facilitation skills of facilitators
  • Identify needs for training

Objective 3

  • Coordinate with internal staff and local stakeholders to ensure smooth project implementation.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Liaise closely with the WASH Sector Manager throughout the planning, design and implementation stages of WASH technical activities.
  • Represent AAH at local level WASH meetings and technical working groups relating to BCC and hygiene and sanitation promotion.
  • Collaborate closely with nutrition, health and FSSL teams to create a coherent and unified communication for the organization.

Objective 4

  • Supervise and manage staffs under your responsibility.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in staff’s recruitment in line with agreed organogram structure.
  • Provide day-to-day management of staff directly under your responsibility.
  • Set objectives with staff under your direct management, and appraise their performance in accordance with AAH performance management policies, identifying areas where they require support and capacity building.
  • Ensure that your team co-ordinate and integrate with WASH technical team members.
  • Ensure that specific gender needs are taken into account and staffs of all gender, religion or origin are being treated with equal respect.
  • Promote AAH values and principles.
  • Report regularly, verbally and in writing, to the WASH Program Manager

Internal & External Relationship
Internal:

  • WASH sector manager: Technical hierarchal relationship- exchange of information, collaboration and coordination.
  • WASH officer/Assistants- collaborate to ensure the exchange of information, collaboration and coordination.
  • Other project teams: collaborate to ensure the exchange of information, collaboration and coordination.

External:

  • Local government and non-governmental partners: exchange of information, coordination, training, supervision, influence of choice of technical options.
  • Local representatives of international aid organization: exchange of information.

Reporting Responsibilities

  • Monthly field activity report
  • Weekly to project sitrep
  • Monthly cash forecast.

Position Requirements

  • Degree/HND in Public Health, Environmental Health, Sociology, Rural Development and any other related field with Public Health promotion experience of 2 years.

Skills & Experience
Essential:

  • Previous experience in supervising hygiene promotion activities and BCC.
  • Experience in conducting formative research (BA, FGD, PRA tools and qualitative interview, etc.)
  • Professional, good organizational capacity, motivated, open, creative, mature, responsible, flexible and culturally sensitive.
  • Three years of relevant experience
  • Microsoft office software skills (outlook, Excel, Power point, word)
  • Willing and able to be based and travel regularly remote areas where services are limited.
  • Fluently in Hausa and English – oral, written, and at least basic of Kanuri language.
  • Commitment to Action Against Hunger(AAH) missions values and policy.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience of Works in the humanitarian sector.
  • Good knowledge of the intervention area.
  • Previous experience with AAH
  • Previous donor programming experience (e.g. GAC, ECHO, USAID, DFID, SDC, CIDA).

Remuneration
Minimum Monthly Basic Salary: N235,585 per month.
