Job Title: Head of Legal
Location: Nigeria
Job Description and Responsibilities
The major responsibilities of the Head of Legal shall include but not be limited to:
- Provide proactive, in-depth, business- focused legal support to senior management and the various units within the company.
- Co-ordinate / supervise external counsel with a view to ensuring maximum protection and best possible outcomes in all of the company’s transactions and litigation/ dispute resolution matter.
- Coordinate engagement with external parties (such as customers of the company, government, other regulatory authorities and industry-focus groups, among other external stakeholders) in connection with various aspects of the company’s operations.
- Provide leadership to the company’s legal arid compliance departments.
- Train, mentor and supervise other members of the legal department.
- Prepare, implement and monitor the legal department’s budget.
- Participate and provide legal advice in the formulation of general management policy.
- Prepare, review and oversee negotiation of contracts and other legal documents, to ensure that all legal transactions involving the company and its subsidiaries comply with applicable laws and other binding obligations of the company, as well as align with the overall strategy and policies of the company.
- Manage the company’s litigation / dispute portfolio and ensure effective implementation of litigation/dispute resolution strategies.
- Keep the senior management and all personnel informed of legal developments which affect or potentially affect the company’s different units and/ or transactions.
- Ensure the protection of the best interests of the company at all times.
Minimum Qualifications
- First Degree in Law (a minimum of second- class lower division).
- Council of Legal Education Certificate / Nigerian Law School (a minimum of second-class lower division).
- Provided that Applicants must have second-class upper division qualification from at least one of the University or Nigerian Law School Call to Bar Certificate.
- Masters’ Degree or professional qualifications in relevant disciplines will be an added advantage.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- At least fifteen (15) years’ post-call and legal work experience.
- Applicants should be between ages 40 and 50 years of age.
- Applicants must be willing to work from, or be assigned to, any location in Nigeria (and successful candidate is likely to work from more than one location, from time to time).
