Leeds Masters Scholarship aim to encourage students from under-represented groups to study a postgraduate qualification. They are funded by the generous donations of our alumni through the University of Leeds Footsteps Fund. Due to the delay of certain courses to January 2021, we are able to re-open Leeds Masters Scholarship applications for a strictly limited period to those beginning their studies in January 2021. Further information can be found under the ‘How to Apply’ section.
How much is it worth?
£5,000 paid in eight cash instalments of £625 when you have been verified as registered on your course. The money is paid directly to you – from the end of October to the end of May.
Leeds Masters Scholarship recipients also have access to the University’s Plus Programme throughout their studies, providing dozens of free and bespoke activities during the year, pastoral support, extra funding opportunities and more.
You can use the Leeds Masters Scholarship payments to pay for your fees or maintenance costs, or anything else you need. Remember though, as a Masters student you are responsible for making the arrangements to pay your fees yourself.
Can I apply?
To be eligible to apply for a Leeds Masters Scholarship you must meet all of the main criteria and one of the financial criteria below. This does not mean you will automatically get a scholarship, but we will consider your application carefully.
You can still apply for Leeds Masters Scholarship if you are getting a Postgraduate Loan from the government.
Leeds Masters Scholarship Main criteria
You must meet all of the main criteria:
- commence a full-time, part-time or distance learning Masters programme at the University of Leeds beginning January 2021. This must lead directly to an MA, MBA, MEd, MMus, MPH, MRes, MSc or LLM qualification
- be a UK student paying postgraduate tuition fees at the UK rate
- not already hold a Masters degree
- not have your postgraduate tuition fees paid for you (partly or fully) for example by an employer or public funding body (eg NHS/NHSBSA).
Leeds Masters Scholarship, Financial criteria
You must meet the financial criteria for one of the following:
If you graduated from a full-time undergraduate degree in 2019 or are due to in 2020 – you must provide evidence that you received a Maintenance Loan greater or equal to the value indicated in the table below for at least one year of study.

If you graduated from a full-time undergraduate degree in 2017 or 2018 – you must be able to provide evidence that you received one of the following for at least one year of study:
- Maintenance Grant
- Special Support Grant
- Assembly Learning Grant
- Welsh Government Learning Grant
- SAAS Bursary
All other applicants – you must be able to provide evidence of individual, gross taxable income during the 2018/19 tax year of no more than:
- £36,488 if you lived in the Greater London region during the 2018/19 tax year
- £25,028 if you lived anywhere else in the rest of the UK during the 2018/19 tax year
Leeds Masters Scholarship
Due to COVID-19 causing the delay of some courses to January 2021, we are able to re-open applications for Leeds Masters Scholarship for a limited period to anyone who meets, in addition to the entry requirements listed above, the below criteria:
- Your programme must begin in January 2021 (it does not matter whether it was always due to begin in January 2021 or if the start date has been delayed).
- You must have not applied for Leeds Masters Scholarship in 2020 already.
Applications will close at 12 noon on Monday 28th September 2020. We regret we cannot accept applications after this date under any circumstances. We will publish information here about 2021 entry scholarships in spring 2021.
Scholarships are not awarded on a first-come first-serve basis – all applications will be assessed after the closing date.
Give as much detail as you can in your answers to make sure we can assess your application as fairly as possible.

Applicants with a disability
If you have a disability you can ask for this to be taken into consideration in your application. So it is fair for everyone, trained advisors in the University’s Disability Services decide if your disability can be considered as part of your application. To allow them to do this you need to first register with Disability Services. We advise you to do this immediately after you have completed your Leeds Masters Scholarship application to avoid any delay to your application.
When will I find out if I’ve got a scholarship?
You probably won’t hear until the 2 November 2020 whether your application has been successful (subject to you providing the necessary evidence). After the closing date, we assess all the applications as quickly as possible. However, this takes some time because we have to assess against a large number of criteria.
