As part of its response to irregular migration, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) continues to engage journalists in Nigeria and other parts of the world in information campaigns aimed at preventing trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants, and promoting safe migration. Recognizing the power and popularity of the media, IOM helps to share expertise with journalists to enhance their reportage including on ethical reporting, usage of migration data, and protection concerns.
In November 2020, IOM launched the Migration Reporter competition, an annual competition to offer a platform for journalists who provide trusted and reliable information to at-risk youth by sharing compelling stories about the migration experience. Understanding the role of the media as public educators, IOM, through its “Trusted Sources” project, created the competition as a platform to recognize exemplary media coverage.
Deadline: 15th November (11:59pm WAT).
The Migration Reporter is designed as an annual competition to commemorate International Migrants Day, a United Nations day to raise awareness about the benefits and challenges of international migration, as well as to recognise and celebrate the contributions of migrants to their countries of origin and the communities that welcome them. The competition rewards the excellence, relevance and newsworthiness of nine works of journalism in three different categories dealing with the challenges faced by migrants in their quest for a better life, the risks of trafficking and smuggling and other thematic areas that address contemporary issues on migration.
