Position Summary

  • Creative is seeking a Senior Non-Formal Education/Teacher Professional Development (NFE/TPD) Specialist for an anticipated donor-funded project in Nigeria.
  • The Senior NFE/TPD Specialist is responsible for overseeing NFE facilitator and teacher professional development and support activities for the anticipated project to ensure that educators have the skills and support needed to achieve improved learning outcomes in selected subjects, including literacy, numeracy, and social emotional learning, for children and youth.
  • S/he will lead efforts to improve educational quality in target regions/districts through teacher training and professional development leadership and support to the project team, partners, stakeholders, and beneficiaries.

Reporting Supervision:

  • The Senior NFE/TPD Specialist will report to the Senior Advisor for Education in Conflict and provide technical leadership and support for NFE/TPD activities and staff in both the project main and field offices.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the technical lead overseeing learning facilitator and teacher professional development and support activities for project main and field offices.
  • Supervises the implementation of introductory workshops and meetings, and the implementation of all master trainer’s workshops.
  • Provides capacity development support to state and local government counterparts around implementation of non-formal and formal teacher professional development and support programs.
  • Contributes to efforts to track, monitor, and evaluate inputs, outputs, and outcomes of facilitator/teacher professional development and support activities, in close coordination with the M&E team.
  • Trains and provides support to trainers and implementing CSOs in all activities related to the professional development and support of teachers and learning facilitators.
  • Supports the development and field testing of strategies, tools, and resources for teacher and learning facilitator training and ongoing support, and ensures their dissemination and use.
  • Provides guidance and needed inputs to other staff working on facilitator/teacher professional development and support activities.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree (or foreign equivalent) in Education, Education Administration, Supervision, Development Studies, Political Science, Conflict Resolution, Public Administration, or a related field from an accredited university, master’s degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of pedagogical concepts and skills around literacy, numeracy and socio-emotional learning, and how to impart these concepts and skills to educators
  • Demonstrated experience improving evidence-based education programming including to rural, ethnolinguistic, and underserved populations
  • Demonstrated experience in coaching and mentoring of teachers and learning facilitators
  • At least six (6) years of general work experience, with at least four (4) years of experience on early grade literacy projects in formal or non-formal education settings, including two (2) years of experience working on conflict programs
  • Prior experience and demonstrated skills with the development and implementation of teacher and learning facilitator training, support, and monitoring programs and protocols, including those that are evidence-based, in local languages, and tailored for crisis and conflict environments
  • Able to translate complex, technical concepts to a range of stakeholders, with differing levels of knowledge
  • Proficient and fluent in written and spoken English and strong oral and written communication skills
  • Experience working in education programs in conflict-affected contexts.

Desired Skills and Qualifications

  • Prior experience with supporting civil society and parental engagement of reading is preferred, but not required
  • Prior experience in developing gender-sensitive and inclusive education activities
  • Proficiency in Hausa, Kanuri, or other languages are spoken in Northeast Nigeria
  • Experience working in Northeast Nigeria.
