Objectives of the Program
- The World Health Organization (WHO) Nigeria continues to provide technical and programme management support to the GoN of Nigeria to achieve Accelerated Disease Control targets through routine and Supplemental Immunization activities.
- Following a successful application for the follow up measles nation wide campaigns as well as preventive mass campaigns to Gavi and receipt of Decision letters to Nigeria, initial planning activities have commenced as part po pre-implementation towards a successful vaccination campaign
- These campaigns are part of the strategic plan adopted by Nigeria towards measles and yellow fever control. In Q3 and Q4 of 2021 Nigeria intends to vaccinate 45,541,201 children aged 9Months -59 Months with a supplementary dose of measles across all states plus FCT.
- Also as part of approved the accelerated EYE strategy plan was shared with the EYE secretariat, Preventive mass vaccination campaigns with yellow fever vaccines will be conducted also across 6 States targeting 40,825,243 persons aged 9Months-44years across 7 states.
- These campaigns will be conducted in an integrated approach where feasible considering the different antigens to be administered through SIAs in 2021.This is expected to contribute to prevention of epidemics and pandemics (outcome 2.2) of the GPW 13.
Description of Duties
In conjunction with the Vaccine preventable disease (VPD) team and WHO Nigeria based staff, the State Technical Officers (STO) will provide support to:
- Strengthening state coordination teams for the Planned SIAs
- Conducting pre-implementation activities including preparedness dashboard,
- Support training of health workers, team deployment of vaccination teams and
- Support data management including monitoring and evaluation.
- The STO is expected to bring to the state/LGAs previous experience from planning and implementation of previous VPD mass campaigns as well as vast understanding of the WHO guidelines of the implementation of mass campaigns in the context of Covid-19 while working closely with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) ,State primary health care Boards partners and several stakeholders. It is desirable that they consultant also brings a good understanding of issues relating to immunization, vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) surveillance, and gender equity.
- Meet with government authorities, such as NPHCDA, Ministry of Health, and other stakeholders to collect feedback on planned activities.
- Based on the primary and secondary information gathered, and in accordance with Gavi proposal, firstly a) support the drafting of the proposal including chronogram of activities and annexes, and secondly b) support the review of the budget.
Required Qualifications
Education
Essential:
- University Degree, preferably in one of the following: Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Public Health
Desirable:
- Post-graduate degree in Public Health, preferably in Epidemiology or other related public health fields.
Experience
Essential:
- At least 5 years’ experience in Immunization activities in similar roles in an organization concerned with public health management.
Desirable:
- Prior working experience with international nongovernmental organization (INGOs), WHO/UN, health clusters partners, recognized humanitarian organizations.
- Understanding of WHO guidelines for implementation of mass campaigns in the context of Covid-19
