Job Summary
- To support security, safety and protection services for the office and team in Nigeria. Including security monitoring, evaluation of missions, knowledge management, staff and case-management, risk analysis and risk management. To coordinate and produce periodic reports on security situation in the country.
About The Role
- The Protection and Security Advisor will support security, safety and protection services for the office and team in Nigeria. Including security monitoring, evaluation of missions, knowledge management, staff and case management, risk analysis and risk management. About You
- The suitable candidates must have an extensive experience of security analysis and security management in Africa especially in Nigeria; knowledge of case management, physical and digital security risks, information security risks, risk analysis, and the ability to advise on potential mitigation measures; strong understanding of an organization’s duty of care requirements and how this will integrate with other good security practices, health and safety legislation and organizational needs in the local context.
Main Responsibilities
- Advise on all safety, protection and security related issues in Nigeria.
- Reviewing the organisation’s existing security policies and procedures
- Providing operational advice and support as required to managers and staff on the preparation and execution of high-risk travel, including direct security support during deployments in high-risk areas
- Identifying and scoring the prevalent security threats including terrorism, workplace violence, civil unrest, cyberattack, armed conflict, organized and violent crime, and political violence.
- In collaboration with the Director, designing and implementing fit-for purpose, practical security plans and reviewing them on a regular basis.
- Providing professional security risk assessment advice and support to management.
- Assessing potential security threats or breaches and creating contingency plans for when breaches occur.
- Contribute to the identification, selection and management of outsourced security services and contractors.
- Developing and implementing crisis management procedures and contribute to the team’s response during a crisis or unexpected work
- Develop and ensure the effective functioning of emergency response protocols
- Overseeing security incident response and ensure effective security incident reporting in Nigeria
- Developing, coordinating, and delivering all security-related training for staff, partners, and supporters.
- Training staff to recognize and defend against security breaches and risks
- Developing and maintaining a case-management system for activists and individuals at risk
- Capturing and analysing political, social, economic, environmental, trends, and best practices to continuously improve the organisation and staff safety and security profiles
- Coordinating, producing, updating, and presenting reports on security situation in Nigeria
- Remaining up to date with the latest security systems, tools, trends, and technology.
- Promote a common understanding within Nigeria of security and risk management as an essential element underpinning Amnesty’s work
- Liaise with, the Regional Security Manager – Sub-Saharan, other Amnesty Global Security Team members, and relevant directorates/programmes to develop and implement joint policies and guidelines to support the Global Security Framework
- This is not an exhaustive list of duties. The need for flexibility is required and the post holder is expected to carry out any other related duties, that are within the employee’s skills and capabilities whenever reasonably instructed.
Working Relationships:
- Reporting to: Country Director
- Posts that this job manages: None. But the post holder may on occasion supervise temporary staff, interns, team volunteers and external consultants.
- Other key relationships: Amnesty International Nigeria staff, Regional Security Manager – Sub-Saharan Africa, Global Security Team (GST).
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- A Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant discipline or professional training in Security Management or a related field, or comparable work experience/certification
- At least 5 years work experience. Non-profit/NGO sector experience, is desirable
- Extensive experience of security analysis and security management in Africa especially in Nigeria
- Knowledge of case-management, physical and digital security risks, information security risks, risk analysis, and ability to advise on potential mitigation measures
- Strong understanding of an organisation’s duty of care requirements and how this will integrate with other good security practices, health and safety legislation and organisational needs in the local context
- Excellent attention to detail and experience of drafting and reviewing security policies, procedures and plans, designing and implementing protection and safety support programmes
- Ability to analyse complex sets of information and reveal trends
- Strong interpersonal skills, a helpful and personable attitude
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and decision-making skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English; other relevant local languages desirable
- Ability to work under pressure, manage conflicting demands, and work to deadlines to achieve results
- Able to work in a manner that is consistent with the organisation’s core behaviours and competencies.
- Possess a high level of resilience, is creative and able to be flexible and change orientation as required;
- Good working knowledge of standard Office software e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
- Ability to use sound judgment and initiative, solve problems and provide constructive inputs.
