1.) Project Development Engineer (Telecoms Solutions)

Job Description

 

  • CrossBoundary Energy (CBE) is recruiting a full-time Development Engineer for the Telecom Solutions sector team.
  • You will actively support CBE’s investments in solar-hybrid assets for telecommunications infrastructure throughout Africa by supporting the development of world-class technical solutions and commercial proposals for our potential clients.
  • You’re both engineer and business developer, being a critical interface between both teams, ensuring that our technical solutions proposed to clients are fit for purpose and competitive, and engaging clients in technical discussions as needed.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conduct hybrid sizing, configuration and design including optimal configuration of solar, thermal and storage seeking to optimize for LCoE
  • Produce preliminary design documentation including layouts, Interconnection strategy, SLD’s, BoQ’s, PVSyst analysis, etc.;
  • Carry out site and situation analysis of projects and effectively drive the technical development to address high risk and critical path workstreams.
  • Support data gathering from customers and associated 3rd parties as required to effectively carry out studies and associated development activities
  • Support with the EPC engagement, contracting, configuration optimization and review of EPC detailed designs
  • Support the business development team with technical inputs for pricing, proposal materials, other sales documentation, and customer engagement
  • Provide technical support during Energy Services Agreement (ESA) contract drafting and negotiations.

Required skills and qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant Engineering field
  • 3+ years of work experience in renewable energy systems; work experience in telecom sector is a pre
  • Solar PV
  • Commercial aptitude and excellent communication skills
  • Battery storage (including understanding different storage technologies and the associated tradeoffs)
  • Diesel generators
  • Demonstrable experience in hybrid/off-grid sizing, configuring and modelling– HOMER (or similar) and/or self-built models
  • Understanding of the key components that form part of a hybrid solution:
  • Strong understanding of DC/DC and AC/DC Electrical Power Systems, Power Electronics, and Solar energy systems
  • Writes clearly, professionally, and without grammatical errors
  • Highly competent in both Excel and Powerpoint.

Qualifications:
Ideal candidate will have the following skills and qualifications:

  • 3+ years of relevant working experience
  • 2+ year of work experience in solar PV, SHS, minigrids or minigrid design and implementation with a top-tier firm
  • Experience designing a small scale solar/storage/thermal hybrid project Undergone some project management training
  • Good commercial understanding of the solar IPP model including an understanding of project finance
  • Demonstrable hands-on experience deploying renewable energy solutions in rural areas
  • Interest and understanding of the telecom world.

2.) Project Manager (Telecoms Solutions)

Job Location: Lagos

Job Description

  • We are recruiting a full-time Development Project Manager for the Telecom Solutions sector team.
  • You will actively support CBE’s investments in solar-hybrid assets for telecommunications infrastructure throughout Africa by coordinating development of large-scale energy solutions deployments between various CBE departments (business development, engineering, regulatory, ESG, and finance) as well as external partners and stakeholders.
  • You will take responsibility for the successful development of each of your projects to ‘shovel ready’ and ensure seamless integration with the implementation team.
  • You will report to the Project Development Director, Telecoms  and form a key part of the fast-growing telecom sector team.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and track efforts between internal departments and external stakeholders
  • Ensure timely development of the project and ensuring seamless handover to the implementation team
  • Develop and manage the project development plan including all associated inputs and activities;
  • Develop and manage the project development and implementation budgets
  • Take full ownership and responsibility for developing projects from award through to commercial close in line with baseline project plan and budget, including:
    • Lead stakeholder engagements and meetings;
    • Oversee and manage all activities on the project development plan including all inputs and workstreams from internal and external parties;
    • Continually seek project optimizations relating to cost, timeline, project performance and anything else that may result in a greater financial return for CBE and/or better outcome for the customer;
    • Manage the customer approval of system design and design interfaces with customer infrastructure in collaboration with the CBE Engineering team;
    • Maintain a holistic understanding of the status of the project in relation to development budget, project costs, performance impacts, permitting and licensing risks and schedule impacts;
    • Continually identify and manage project risks (land/political/technical/regulatory/financial/supply chain) and develop corresponding mitigation strategies;
    • Manage any customer enabling works or customer led development activities to ensure alignment in terms of quality and timelines relating to CBE’s delivery of the project;
    • Manage the licensing and permitting process and approvals in collaboration with the CBE regulatory and ESG teams;
    • Maintain the integrity of our ESMS in all aspects of the project to ensure that we are striving towards the highest possible ESG performance.

Required skills and qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field
  • 5+ years of work experience in project development or project management in energy and/or telecoms
  • Good technical understanding of energy projects, project finance, and
  • Writes clearly, professionally, and without grammatical errors
  • Formal project management training and demonstrable experience
  • Commercial aptitude and excellent communication skills
  • Highly competent in common project management methods and software tools
  • Highly competent in both Excel and Powerpoint.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have the following skills and qualifications:

  • Work experience in telecom sector
  • Good commercial understanding of the solar IPP model including an understanding of project finance
  • Good understanding of the licensing and permitting procedures for energy projects;

3.) Site Construction Manager

Job Location: Lagos (with frequent travel to project locations, both domestically and internationally)

Job Description

  • We are recruiting a Construction Manager to manage the construction process for CBE’s renewable energy (solar PV, wind, etc.) projects for commercial and industrial customers.
  • The Construction Manager will contribute to all facets of project planning and execution for CBE’s projects that are under construction.
  • The Construction Manager will be the main interface point between CBE’s Project Development Team, CBE’s EPC contractors, and CBE’s clients on topics related to the construction of CBE’s projects.
  • This role will require occasional international travel and reports to the Head of Project Development.
  • CBE is not an EPC or a pure developer, as we seek to build a portfolio of long-term, high-performing assets. CBE will look to you for practical insights on how to make discrete business decisions that will directly affect our financial outcomes.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Monitor and update project work schedules using existing templates and effectively track project progress throughout construction.
  • Consistently, accurately, and clearly capture project EHS and construction data. Transmit weekly reports to the team through existing tools in accordance with reporting deadlines, including stakeholder grievances and any incident reports.
  • Investigate opportunities to improve project implementation process to deliver best value to the customer and CBE.
  • Interpret basic technical design principles related to energy systems, electrical systems, and the built environment, including technical drawings and equipment data sheets.
  • Apply international standards for environmental, social, and health & safety risk management thoroughly, knowledgeably, and consistently on solar construction sites via ESMS procedures.
  • Effectively manage internal and external stakeholders to complete scheduled tasks.
  • Identify project schedule and budget risks at an early stage and alert Project Development Manager in time to minimize or mitigate impacts.
  • Meet with third-party technical stakeholders (including attending weekly progress meetings and tracking EHS updates) to ask questions and accurately take notes on construction problems for later discussion and review with Project Development Manager.
  • Coordinate preparation, review and revision of draft RAMs produced by EPC and subcontractors to plan appropriately for mitigating risks during project construction.
  • Demonstrate awareness of all laws and regulations relevant for project work and proactively raise questions with Project Development Manager about best practices for compliance.
  • Support in conducting site audits of compliance to CBE and international EHS standards. Recommend and validate corrective actions to close compliance gaps.
  • Work with CBE’s Supplier Chain team to track procurement orders and coordinate with the EPC contractor to prioritize construction activities according to equipment delivery schedules.
  • Support application for and acquisition of project permits for generation, construction, environmental certification, and any other permissions as appropriate.
  • Use and build existing processes and tools to manage project implementation, and effectively de-risk CBE’s construction projects.
  • Support in asserting key elements of EHS on a construction site, confidently recommending changes and new ways of operating to teammates and external contractors.
  • Assess and substantiate variation orders/change orders and escalate to internal project development team as necessary.
  • Perform pre-invoice verification to ensure that milestones’ deliverables are achieved before payments are paid out to EPC contractors.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Construction-related field.
  • 7+ years of work experience in construction management required.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver on construction of large-scale energy projects, through the full project lifecycle.
  • Demonstrated progression of project construction management responsibilities.
  • Work experience/competency or demonstrated familiarity with large-scale and hybrid renewable energy generation plants, especially hybrid solar PV, BESS plants, and wind power plants.
  • Experience in document control, scheduling, and cost control/tracking.
  • Project Managers Professional (PMP) certificate or comparable experience and/or demonstration of formal training in project management is desired but not required.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of MS Office suite (e.g., PowerPoint, Excel, Word, etc.), as well as, demonstrated competency in the use of MS Projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently supervise multi-stakeholder projects.
  • Communicates effectively across diverse audiences.
  • Writes clearly and professionally.
