Job Title: Laboratory Technologist

Summary
- The position will ensure the efficient running of the laboratory to meet the goals and objectives of the School of Arts & Sciences.
- The duties shall include but NOT limited to preparing solutions, setting-up equipment for scheduled labs and also adhering to lab safety rules to include proper labeling of chemicals and supplies in accordance with the school’s standard operating procedures.
- The incumbent shall maintain a physical presence in the lab to ensure the security of equipment and supplies.
Duties
- Under the strict supervision of the Senor Biology Lab Technologist, the position interacts with and responds to the needs of Natural and Environmental Sciences faculty members in the School of Arts and Sciences in preparation of science labs for research and instruction during the summer.
- Assist in maintaining records and filing of orders, equipment, supplies, and chemicals used in and/or stored in the lab areas.
- Assist in providing laboratory needs for supplies and equipment and related items as needed.
- Maintains instructional and research lab facilities, equipment, and supplies in a clean, orderly, safe, and clearly and accurately labeled lab and storage environment, following safety and emergency procedures needed.
- Prepare culture media, chemicals, solutions and reagents.
- Ensure that instruments, glassware and equipment are clean and sterilized;
- Assist in keeping routine laboratory records.
- Ensuring timely readiness of labs for all lab experiments.
- Assist in preparation of Labs for practical sessions
- Maintain lab in clean order
- Prepares labs for research and instructional experiments in a timely, thorough, and consistent fashion to specifications laid out by the Senior Lab Technologist
- Assist in performing a variety of technical duties in laboratory to include performance of routine tests and examinations, assistance in the set-up of experiments and the collection and recording of data.
- Procure and set-up equipment, instruments and materials used in performing scheduled tests or experiments ahead of labs.
- Assist in preparing tissue specimens for cutting; using microtome to obtain sections for mounting; and staining sections with dye and mount on slides ahead of labs
- Repair, maintain and operate standard laboratory equipment.
- Assist in designing teaching materials before all lab sessions
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- HND or Bachelors of Science Degree in a Biological Sciences discipline.
- One (1) year or post NYSC experience in a similar role.
- Knowledge of instrumentation such as centrifuges, spectrophotometers and electronic balances.
- Good working knowledge of chemicals and supplies in the science area.
- Excellent knowledge of safety and emergency procedures in science laboratories.
- Ability to organize work effectively and deal calmly and patiently with faculty members and students in the face of time pressures.
- Excellent attention to details.
Other requirements, abilities for the position:
- Experience working in a university setting with faculty, students, and staff.
- Excellent written and oral English skills.
- Experience using relevant computer software applications preferred
